PERFORATION GAUGE (recommended)

Measuring the number of perforation holes in a two-centimeter space along the edge of a stamp is often the only way to tell the difference betwee two stamps that may look exactly alike, but actually belong to different issues. By placing a stamp on a perforation gauge, and moving the stamp up and down until the dots on the gauge perfectly fit the holes along the edge of the stamp, you can exactly tell what the "perf. number" is.
