CATALOGUES

A catalogue is basically an illustrated list of stamps, usually arranged in sets according to face value, and listed in order of the date of issue. Besides helping to identify stamps and giving the current market values, catalogues also provide other information: colour and design variations, watermarks, perforation numbers, type of printing used, etc. Both general world-wide and specialized catalogues are available.

WORLD WIDE CATALOGUES

The world-wide catalogues most widely used in the U.S is the Scott Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue (U.S). Other highly regarded world-wide catalogues include the Minkus (U.S0, Stanley Gibbons (U.K), Michel (Germany), and Yvert & Tellier (France).

In the catalogues, the individual stamps in the set are listed, with the index, or catalogue, number, design-type number (referring to the illustration with that number), denominition, colour (if two or more colours are used, the colour of the frame or border is given first, then the colours of the central, or vignette portion of the design), and the prices for unused and canceled copies of the stamp. Minor variations are denoted by a lowercase alphabet letter.

SPECIALIZED CATALOGUES

Specialized catalogues deal with specific topics, countries, or types of issues. The largest selling catalog for U.S and Canada stamps is the Harris Reference Catalog of Postage Stamp Prices of the United States, Canada and Provinces.Other prominent specialized catalogues include the Scott U.S Specialized Catalogue, Sanabria's World Airmail Catalogue
